Trash off, environmental fair set for April 14

Published: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 4:24 PM CDT
Keep Flower Mound Beautiful (KFMB) and the town are preparing for its annual event that keeps Flower Mound beautiful.

The Spring Trash Off and Environmental/Green Fair are set for April 14 at Home Depot, 852 International Parkway. The trash-off will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon with the fair set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers will be provided litter supplies and will help clean up different areas of town. Participants will receive a free lunch and will have a chance to win door prizes. The first 200 residents to pre-register will receive a free T-shirt.

"We had about 450 people who participated in the trash off last year," said Marilyn Lawson of KFMB. "We had about 300 the year before that. This is a pretty big deal because of how it has grown."

Lawson said there has been an increase partly because of the number of organized groups that have started participating, such as church groups and scout troops.

"I think participation increases as people start learning more about what we do and what we're about," Lawson said.

For information or to register, visit www.kfmb.org, e-mail info@kfmb.org or call 469-828-9074.

The fair will feature about 25 booths, many from Home Depot that will provide information on a range of topics.

In addition, the town will have several booths. One will give information on storm water, which may include rainwater harvesting and rain barrels. Other booths will have information on tree/urban forestry education, and residents can receive tree seedlings. The town's Environmental Conservation Commission (ECC) will have a booth to discuss open space and ways to volunteer. And a general environmental education booth may include bee/insect education, native plants and kids activities.

Other organizations or businesses that are expected to have a booth include the Denton County Master Gardeners, Denton County Master Naturalists, the Lewisville Lake Educational Learning Area (LLELA), Costco, Waste Management, CoServ and the town's environmental conservation commission (ECC), which will discuss open space conservation, volunteer opportunities and what the commission's responsibilities are.

Residents will also be able to bring paper to be recycled at the event.

In a separate event, KFMB will host a backyard composting class from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 5 at Coram Deo Academy, 4900 Wichita Trail. Contact KFMB to pre-register or for information.
