The Celina ISD Board of Trustees named Interim Superintendent Donny O'Dell as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent for the Celina Independent School District at the regular meeting in April.

Final approval of O'Dell's hiring is scheduled for the May school board meeting. O'Dell was long time assistant superintendent until Superintendent Rob O'Connor resigned last year. At that time O'Dell stepped in as interim superintendent.

After approving the consent agenda O'Dell spoke to the board about dual credit courses at the high school. He said he met with Collin College President Cary Israel, Provost of the Collin College Preston Ridge campus Dr. Brenda Kihl and Vice President of the Dual Credit program at Collin College Sabrina Belt.

Collin College will offer psychology and history at the high school campus five days a week.

“They are trying and we are trying to make things work,” O'Dell said. “We're going to continue to strive to make Collin College the provider of choice. Grayson County College can fill in the gaps.”

The board approved a Concussion Management Team as presented by CISD athletic trainer coach Kyle Sheridan.

He outlined the formation of a concussion management team in compliance with House Bill 2038 known as “Natasha's Law” that requires a concussion management team to be appointed. The team will monitor student athletes for signs of concussion and make sure they follow protocols outlined in the bill before they can return to play.

Secondary Curriculum Director Lizzy Kloiber presented the class ranking policy to the board. She said high school students will not be given a number indicating where they rank in the class. She said this eliminates competition among students for top class rankings. Only core classes will be considered in the Grade Point Average.

In closed session the board of trustees discussed district administrative benefits and the superintendent search. No action was taken after the closed session.

O'Dell and school principals presented the spring Superintendent's Awards to students from all four campuses.
