Donna Laird and Brenda Cavender have seen a lot of changes take place in the Collin County Clerk's Office during the last 15 years.
Laird started to work in the county clerk's office March 11, 1997 and Cavender started March 25, 1997.
Collin County Clerk Stacey Kemp on Monday presented the two with 15-year service pins at a regular meeting of the Collin County Commissioners Court.
In 2009, the county clerk's office was relocated to the county administration building, at 2300 Bloomdale Road.
There have been many changes over the years, but the most welcome changes have been those involving computers.
Cavender started her career with the county clerk's office in the indexing department (data entry) and is now senior administrator over the county clerk's Land Department.
"In 2006, we had a new software system installed that I was instrumental in getting implemented," she said. "With this system, the public can access our records 24/7 and also complete request applications, therefore saving them time."
She added, "All the new technology that has been implemented over the past few years now means that we can file 67 percent of our land documents electronically. This makes things more efficient and cost effective."
To access records, residents may go to www.collincountytx.gov.
Laird said she is especially happy that documents can now be filed electronically, rather than on paper.
"When I first came to work, the filings were done with an old stamper that required you to handle every page, and sometimes the pages had to be folded so that the filing information would fit on that page," she said. "We now use an automated system that prints out labels. We now do about 67 percent of our filings electronically."
Laird works at the front filing counter, which is customer-service oriented. She answers phones, records documents that are mailed in and spends much of her time filing documents electronically.
"I love my job because I am able to interact with people and help them take care of their filing needs or direct them to where they need to go," she said. "Stacey has always been a very special lady to work for. She is a blessing and will always speak to you with kindness and respect."
Laird added, "Working with my fellow employees has always been a special time each day because we interact and care about each other and our customers, and everyone gets along beautifully. I would like to thank all the people I work with and all the special people that come through our doors, because they are the best."
Cavender said, "I love my job and I could not ask for a better boss than Stacey Kemp, and I enjoy working with all my fellow employees."
Kemp, who worked in the county clerk's office before beginning duties as county clerk in 2007, praised Cavender and Laird as "dedicated employees who have a passion for their work and are excellent when it comes to customer service."
"I am blessed to not only have them as my employees, but also as my friends," she said.
