Randle invited to Team USA tryout

Prestonwood Christian Academy junior Julius Randle is one of the 24 players invited to attend the 2012 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team Training Camp this summer.

The Lions standout will venture to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs June 5-12 for camp, eyeing a spot on the 12-man roster.

One of six invitees from the Class of 2013, Randle will train under the guise of coaches Billy Donovan (Florida), Shaka Smart (Virginia Commonwealth) and Mark Few (Gonzaga), with the team's finalists set to be named following the first three or four days of camp.

The team will participate in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiao do Paraiso, Brazil.

Buescher nabs first NASCAR Truck win

At long last, Plano native James Buescher has a NASCAR Truck Series win to his name.

The 22-year-old Planoite was victorious for the first time in 76 tries Saturday from Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

"I can't even count the number of times we finished second," Buescher said. "We've had a lot of second-place finishes, but we finally got the win."

Buescher, who won the Nationwide Series opener at Daytona in February, passed Brad Keselowski with 10 laps remaining and pulled away late en route to victory. Entering Saturday's race, Buescher had posted four runner-up finishes in Truck Series competition.

Buescher now sits in second place in the NASCAR Truck Series, four points behind Timothy Peters, who finished second in Kansas.

Local linksters light up Mansfield

Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield was the site of Sunday's Texas Golf Association Medalist Series Event, with no shortage of local competition on tap.

At the conclusion of the two-day weekend fray, a trio of Plano natives broke into the top 15.

John Schaefer led that pack by placing third with scores of 70 and 72. Schaefer's total was three strokes behind tournament champion John Bearrie (139). Joining Schaefer in the mix were Planoites Douglass Reed Jr., who tied for 13th (162), and Alexander Rodriguez, who finished 15th (163).

100 days from Olympics

For Planoites/Olympic hopefuls Nastia Liukin and Rebecca Bross, the moment of truth is near.

Wednesday, the United States Olympic Committee celebrated 100-days-out from the start of the 2012 London Games. To commemorate the build for the latest global competition, the USOC is orchestrating the Raise Our Flag initiative, a symbol of public support for Olympic athletes.

People will have a chance to back Team USA by buying a stitch in the flag Americans will carry into the Opening Ceremony.

A stitch costs $12 and can be purchased at: TeamUSA.com. After the purchase, each donor receives a personal number for their respective stitch and a place on the site's donor wall.

Donors can dedicate the stitch to a loved one.

Bassett a THSCA All-Star

Last seen on the gridiron helping man the Plano East defense, senior Corey Bassett will now patrol the defensive backfield alongside the state's best.

The cornerback has been selected for the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football game, slated for July 31 at the Alamodome. Partaking in the 78th installment, Bassett was selected to the North, which is coached by Abilene Wylie's Hugh Sandifer.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Mitchell piling up offers

Though he has yet to set a timetable for selecting a school, it appears as though Prestonwood Christian Academy junior Mike Mitchell will be able to play college football just about wherever he wants.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was ranked as the No. 10 linebacker in the country coming out of the recent NIKE Football training camp.

Mitchell currently has offers to: Baylor, Colorado, Houston, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, Virginia and Washington.

Expect that list to grow when Mitchell takes part in The Opening, an invitational competition of the top 150 national players in the Class of 2013.

That event is July 5-8 at NIKE Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

Mitchell is also ranked No. 138 in the country for the Class of 2013 by ESPNU.

Warman breaks school record

Though the Plano Senior boys basketball team had a tough season, it was record-breaking in at least one aspect.

Specifically thanks to Travis Warman.

The senior forward broke a 20-year Wildcats' record for free-throw percentage. Warman made 32-of-35 attempts. His 91.4-percent clip bested the previous record of 88.1 percent, set by Tommy Hatfield in 1991-92.

Warman was honored during the team banquet.

Blalock announces football camp

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Justin Blalock, a Plano East alum, will host his third annual football camp Saturday, June 23 at East.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camp, run by Top Achievers founder Lawrence Mann, is designed for male student-athletes ages 12-18. The event is free, but a $5 donation is appreciated to offset operating costs.

In addition to learning from current and former NFL players and local coaches, campers will receive a t-shirt, backpack and lunch.

"It has been really exciting to see the success of our camp in Plano," Blalock said. "I wanted to take the camp to the next level by offering information that will help these young men plan their future. In addition to teaching football skills, we will have a national college athlete recruiting service provide a workshop."

Attendance is limited to 100.

Those interested in registering, becoming a sponsor or making a donation to The Justin Blalock Foundation can contact Jackie Robinson at: 214-938-5319 or go to: justinblalock.com/camp.

Figueroa returns in June

West Plano Crossfit product Edwin Figueroa will eye his third win in the UFC this summer.

The mixed martial artist has been booked for the promotion's UFC on FX 4 card (June 22) against Ken Stone in a bantamweight (135 pounds) match.

Figueroa (9-1) captured his second straight win in the UFC in February with a split decision over Alex Caceres. Stone (10-3) returns to action after a nine-month layoff. He is 1-1 in the UFC.

The bout will likely take place on the prelim card, which will be broadcast on FUEL TV.
