Friendship Corner Christian Preschool expands with after school program

Published: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 2:54 PM CDT
The Friendship Corner Christian Preschool at the First United Methodist Church of Celina has launched an after school program.

After school program director Kristyne Evanoski, Celina Methodist Church Pastor Jodi Smith, school staff and Celina Chamber of Commerce ambassadors gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

The after school program is an expansion of the church's preschool that has been teaching Celina children for 20 years. It will be Monday through Friday from after school to 6:30 p.m. A bus will pick up participating children after school from Celina Elementary and Intermediate schools.

Evanoski said programs will be individually designed for students according to what parents want for them during after school care.

Those who want it will get help with homework during the after school program.

New Celina Chamber of Commerce President Jeran Akers welcomed the school expansion and its staff to Celina.

“We are particularly proud of the fact that you are doing this in Celina. It is extremely important this ministry you have added to the church,” he said.

Evanoski said she and the staff are considering a pick up at the middle school as well.

Security is important to her and the staff. She said the school is small enough that the whole staff can know all of the parents of all of the student. If someone other than the parent is going to be picking up a child, the parents must let the school know. When that person arrives to pick up a child he or she must present a picture ID before that person will be allowed to pick up the child.

Each classroom in the church hall next to the church will hold 10 students. Students will be with a staff person at all times.

“The most important aspect of the program is the educational component on a student-by-student basis,” Evanoski said.

Staff members are Sheila Patton, Mary Chesney, Kitty Storm, JoAnna Galla, Corina Ramos and Courtney Grace.
