CHS freshman gets mayor, police, firefighters to read to children at the library

Published: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 12:46 PM CDT
Dozens of children and their parents came to the library to be read to by Mayor Jim Lewis, Director of the Economic Development Corporation Corbett Howard and various police and firefighters.

At one point about 70 people were crowded into the Library on the Square for an open house organized by Celina High School student Kayla Dunning.

The 14-year-old organized several story times and the open house as her project to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award.

“I love reading books and I wanted to do something like that. I ended up having a lot of fun,” Dunning said to explain why she chose the library for her project.

“I was astonished at how thorough, innovative, creative and organized in presenting the programs Kayla was,” Celina Library Director Linda Shaw said. “I was thrilled she thought of the library for her service project. It benefited everyone who came in that day.”

Shaw also said that she didn't have to do anything but unlock the door. Dunning had everything planned and under control.

The project also included several story times for children held before the open house on Aug. 7.

“I was more than impressed. The mayor and council talked about what fun they had. She's a smart, cool kid. I want to get her back here next summer as a volunteer,” Shaw added.

Dunning is a member of Girl Scout Troop 883 based in Celina. The Silver Award is the second highest award to be achieved in the Girl Scouts. The highest award is the Gold Award, comparable to an Eagle Scout award in the Boy Scouts. Dunning does not know yet if she will plan another project to achieve her Gold Award.

She is about to enter her freshman year at Celina High School. She plays the clarinet in the Bobcat Band and has just returned from band camp.

One of her favorite books is the science fiction novel “The Hunger Game” by Suzanne Collins. She designed her project to share her joy of reading with younger children.

“A lot of kids in my grade don't enjoy reading,” she said. “I thought if I worked with younger kids it would inspire them to read and they would have the adventures I've had with books.”

She also said that reading a good book is like taking a mini vacation.

She will receive her Silver Award at a banquet later this year.
