A new senior citizen program in Prosper held a picnic in the park on Monday.
Kelly Vanaman is director of the new program. She is a utility billing clerk for the town of Prosper. She recently took on the duties of organizing events for Prosper's senior citizens. She plans to hold an event for senior citizens about once a month.
“We are such a growing town,” Vanaman said, “not only families, but with seniors. We need to show we're a town of spirit and our senior citizens have spirit too. I want to show senior citizens that the town of Prosper cares about them.”
Other activities she wants to organize for the senior citizens are a casino trip and a cooking class at the Prosper fire station. They will get a cooking class and kitchen safety tips.
Vanaman has worked with senior citizens in other jobs and she said she has a passion for senior citizens.
Mayor Pro Tem Ken Dugger and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Meigs Miller and a group of Prosper firefighters also attended the picnic.
Town employees Trudy Lindgren, Saul Alejos, Wade Harden and Roberto Benitez also assist with the program.
“The seniors are so lively and so alive. We've got to get them moving though,” Vanaman said.
