School shows support after loss of student in crash

This is a correction from the story that was originally published online Wednesday.
The Flower Mound child who was killed in a four-car crash late Tuesday afternoon has been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiners Office as 12-year-old Robert Key, a sixth grader at Liberty Christian School in Argyle. His friends knew him as Ian.
Wednesday, Liberty Christian officials spent the morning helping students cope with the loss of a friend.
“Our focus is supporting the students,” Brynn said. “We’re blessed to have the faith that allows us to discuss this with the students and support them.”
During first period, sixth- through eighth-grade students met in an assembly in which 20 youth pastors from the area, counselors and middle school staff discussed grieving and coming together as a community.
During second period, the high school students had a similar assembly. At that point, sixth-grader students had the option of attending class, praying or meeting with counselors.
“Robert was fun-loving and had lots of friends,” Brynn said. “He was a leader, he was involved in athletics and was just a joy to be around.”
The crash occurred at about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 6200 block of Hwy. 377.
Brynn said there were three other people in the car with Key, all of them students at Liberty Christian. Though she couldn’t release their names, she said one was a sophomore, who is in the intensive care unit but is expected to be OK. The other two -- a sixth grader and a junior -- were transported to the hospital but have been treated and released.
According to police reports from the Flower Mound Police Department, a Ford F-150 traveling north stopped on Hwy. 377 to turn left onto Stonecrest Road. While the Ford was stopped, it was hit from behind by a Honda. That forced the Ford into the south-bound lane, causing the driver of a silver Mazda Millennia to lose control of the car. The Mazda collided with a Cadillac driving north on 377.
No other drivers or passengers required medical transport. The crash is still under investigation, and Captain Richard Brooks of the Flower Mound Police Department said it’s too early to know what caused the initial collision.
