Celina school board looks at 08-09 improvement plan, honors Christmas card artist
By Penny Rathbun, Staff writer
Lizzie Kloiber, Secondary Curriculum Director, gave a presentation on the 2008-2009 district improvement plan to the Celina school board of trustees at Monday's regular meeting.
Most of the goals projected in the plan are ongoing in the district. The plan emphasized a positive approach to student achievement, such as sending students to the principal's office for positive rather than negative activities.
A few of the things in the plan turned out not to be feasible, such as implementing a new badge system for visitors. Kloiber said, for now, there are enough people in the front offices to greet visitors at each campus.
Kloiber also presented the Academic Excellence Indicator System report for 2008-2009. The Celina district accountability rating is Recognized. Celina Intermediate School achieved an exemplary rating. SAT and ACT scores showed improvement.
Kloiber said areas of concern are with the Hispanic and economically disadvantaged subgroup of students in ninth to eleventh grades.
“Many of the students in this group have come to Celina at the high school level,” Kloiber said. “Many of them have low reading levels.”
Celina ISD Superintendent Rob O'Connor said the statewide scores were not great.
A goal to improve the scores is to have English as a Second Language classes for middle school and high school students beginning in the fall of 2010.
The board approved Texas Association of School Boards-initiated localized policy updates accounting and activity funds management, personnel-management relations, employee complaint and grievance procedures, and wellness and health services.
The board also adopted a resolution declaring expectation to reimburse expenditures with proceeds of sale of tax exempt obligations.
O'Connor presented a certificate to Celina Middle School seventh grade student Micaela Layman honoring her for creating the winning design for this year's district Christmas card.
Several second grade classes presented a program of holiday songs and dances.
