Texas art continues to flourish at Pilot Point gallery

Published: Thursday, April 30, 2009 7:30 AM CDT
The Farmers and Merchants Gallery in Pilot Point featured something new at the opening of its latest exhibition of Texas Art: Past & Present.

Barbara Delabano and Frances Bearden spoke about what life was like being married to Texas artists Barney Delabano and Ed Bearden.

“They all influenced each other,” Frances Bearden said. “It was easy for Ed to sketch with pencil. He also enjoyed sketching with watercolors.”

Edward Carpenter Bearden was a Dallas native who worked at the Dallas Museum of Arts and was part of the art faculty at Southern Methodist University. His works are known for their intense color.

Bearden was also hired to create portraits of the characters in “Giant” before filming started on the movie. He spent time on the set with the cast, and advised James Dean on what kind of cigarettes Texans smoked several decades earlier.

Barney Delabano was born in Denison, Texas in 1926. He studied with Ed Bearden, Otis Dozier, and Jerry Bywaters at Southern Methodist University in 1947. His works are also known for their intense color.

He worked for 33 years at the Dallas Museum of Art, and was assistant to the director and museum installation designer.

“His putting an exhibit together was really another way of teaching. He would put an exhibit together to enhance a painting,” Barbara Delabano said.

Wes Miller owns the Farmers and Merchants Gallery and antique shop housed in what once was a bank. The bank closed in 1931. Miller bought the building in 1975, restored it, and eventually opened the gallery.

He holds at least two exhibits a year, one at the end of the year and one in the spring.

The exhbition also includes the work of Marty Ray, Wes Miller, John Taylor, Lin Hampton, Richard Ray, Jim Rozek, Christin Humphries, and Jeniffer Stapher-Thomas.

The exhibition will be on display through August 30. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. To 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. To 5 p.m. on Sunday.
