CHS band, choir to perform in Chicago
By THAD JOSEPH, Staff writer
Fifty-five Celina High School students will shine in the bright lights of the big city of Chicago this spring.
Plans are now under way for the high school band and varsity choir to travel from April 2-6 to Chicago to perform and visit cultural and fine arts venues.
Band director Russ Rutherford, Varsity choir director Melonie Fineout and Band Booster President Nancy Thomas have been working on the trip for several months.
The group will take two charter buses from Celina after school on a Thursday and travel 18 hours to Chicago. Upon arrival, they will tour of the Chicago Zoo.
This will be the first trip for the Varsity Choir, which was formed four years ago.
The group submitted performance tapes and qualified to do a public performance at Chicago’s famous Navy Pier on Lake Michigan.
“This is quite an honor and a testament to how far this choir has grown in such a short amount of time,” Fineout said, noting that the Varsity Madrigal choir brought home 12 gold and nine silver medals at last year’s state contest. “All of the students are looking forward to the cultural events and the performance in Chicago.”
The National Adjudicator’s Conference held each year for people involved in judging band, choir, orchestra and jazz band contests throughout the United States, is also sponsoring a festival during the week. The high school band qualified to enter and will be performing at the Harpers College Performance Arts Center.
“This is a great opportunity for these students,” band director Rutherford said. “They work extremely hard during the year, and we all look forward to hearing comments from some of the best adjudicators in the country.”
Not only will both groups be involved in performing, but they also will be taking in the sights of some world-famous venues, such as Shedd Aquarium.
Students also will be able to walk the Magnificent Mile or Michigan Avenue, home to some of the finest shops and architecture in the country. The groups will also take in the Navy Pier, jutting out into Lake Michigan, and will enjoy a Dinner and Dance cruise on Lake Michigan as the sun sets.
The Celina contingent also will attend a Blue Man Group concert.
Both the choir and band will begin fund-raising soon, but Thomas said she is hoping some residents or businesses in the area will help the cause.
“I would love for anyone interested in helping hire these students to call me. They are available for baby-sitting, putting up Christmas decorations, cleaning, or whatever needs you might have,” she said. “We will always be grateful for donations.”
