Las Gatitas display support in many ways

Published: Friday, October 24, 2008 12:39 PM CDT
The Las Gatitas drill team shows their support for Celina’s high school, community, and football team every Friday evening during half-time of Bobcat games with high-kicking and hip-hop dance routines. But their talents don’t stop there.

To be a part of this group, each member must make a year-long commitment to working long hours during the week practicing the routines for each week’s performance. This commitment also includes a very similar routine during the summer months, too.

Under a blistering July sun, the entire group attended a private line camp where they learned seven routines, all choreographed by the Danceline instructors. The Danceline Elite squad is a professional dance group and they host a week long camp in College Station, Texas. Following camp, the squad performed their new routines to their parents and other members of the community.

During camp, Las Gatitas captain Katie Herron, co-captain Andrea Flessa, and lieutenant Hillary Richardson performed nightly in a series of dance competitions. Their performances earned all three awards, including the Magnificent Motivator Award, and the opportunity to travel with the Danceline group to Walt Disney World to perform, or to New York City and attend a special performance of the world-famous Rockettes.

Herron, Flessa, and Richardson not only worked on routines but attended leadership training classes at the camp.

The group can dance, but they are gifted in community service, too. They regularly spend time at Settlers Ridge Care Center assisting and getting to know the residents. They enjoy working during the bingo sessions and are always looking for opportunities around the community to help with whatever is needed.

Las Gatitas sponsor Kelly Babb said she appreciates all the Celina supporters.

“We have a great support group within the community, and we would like to take this time to thank every one of our supporters for their help this year, “Babb said.

Other line members are: seniors Deanna Davenport and Mesa Thomas; juniors Autumn Entrop, Hannah Ford, Melissa Hare, Sydney Higar and Brittany Westmoreland; sophomores Kate Lewis, Natalie McCall and Stephanie Stone; and freshmen Blair Bickham, Aubrey Ewing, Heather Leigh, Breanna Nagy, Stephanie Riley, Kaylyn Schultz Alisha Williams and Chelsey Young.
