Garden Club tour to captivate fall foliage

Published: Monday, October 6, 2008 12:01 PM CDT
The Celina Garden Club will be hosting the inaugural fall garden tour event on Oct. 11, and promises to be a spectacular treat for area residents. There will be six outstanding area gardens to view, and lunch will be served by Burger Fixins of Celina.

In last week’s edition, two area gardens were highlighted and this week the remainder of the tour’s gardens will be reviewed.

When you arrive at the home of Ben and Weslynn Martin, you will feel as if you have arrived in North Texas hill country. Thirty-two acres along the Long Branch of Honey Creek, between Celina and Weston have been the Martins’ home, and pride and joy for the past five years.

Weslynn Martin has utilized native Texas plants in her garden. Entry beds at the end of a Crape Myrtle lined driveway hold limestone boulders and feature Kidney Wood trees, Desert Willow, a Partridge Pea bush and Mexican Bird of Paradise. There is a huge Hackberry which features potted Cacti, Lantana and ornamental grass. A beautiful platoon of orange Gomphrena vies with Blue Mist for a butterfly presentation. Mahonia and American Beauty Berry flank the screened porch. Horsetail reed, Desert Mallow, a Soapberry tree and a huge Salvia Leucantha accent the purple Vitex off the side porch.

Janet and Andy Harvey’s garden is a contrast of colors and water features. An oval, two-tiered fountain focuses on the silver entry doors of the home. This area combines succulents and ornamental grasses. Gray Texas Sage accents the charcoal black and glass of the home with dark green Oaks and huge Oleanders giving contrast.

Janet’s Gerbera Daises, some 10 years old, were planted when she and Andy transformed a cow pasture into the Preston 455 development. More color is created with Bright Crape Myrtles bring even more color to the mix. Water is again featured in the back with a spraying fountain and a simple pool which leads the eye to the six-acre lake beyond. Janet, an accomplished painter of flowers, began gardening to spread her love of vibrant colors from the inside of her home, to the outside. Her art is featured on the Garden tour tickets and brochure. Make sure to take in her hand made mosaic tile table tops and stepping stones in the back.

Just a hop, step and a jump from Celina are the gardens of Mary Ana Stephens’ home in Prosper. A panther guards the front of her home, which features many sculptures incorporated around the estate. Placed throughout the yard is Olde World statuary, angels, cherubs, metal art, birdbaths and St. Francis, watching over all the birds and animals that visit the space.

Follow the path from the driveway through the Wisteria covered arbor to the backyard, as the path winds around the covered porch-patio combination and complemented by a fireplace. She and husband Jim have created a pool waterfall, with help from son, Jon. Jon keeps this all in the family, as owner of Texas Seasons Nursery in Celina. The far back bed by the garden shed is what Mary Ana calls her “hodgepodge of stuff.” She has incorporated roses, perennials, grasses, four rescued trees, and whatever else she can get to survive the highly salted water of Prosper. Five years ago they built their home on what can be described as a flat pasture with no color whatsoever. This acreage has been transformed into an exhibit of art and nature.

Clark and Linda Hornbaker moved into their 10 acre property just eighteen months ago. In a very short amount of time, it has been revitalized as Eden Hill, with a three-fourths acre vineyard harboring Cynthiana/Norton (red), Blanc de Bois (white) and Tempranillo (red) wine grapes.

Recycled materials were used in building the greenhouse and potting shed, which will soon be filled with Linda’s collection of antique garden related treasures. A croquet court is planned for the lawn adjacent to the shed.

Lavender plots, flower beds, fall and summer vegetables gardens, a 142-foot by 42-foot asparagus bed and a very unique gazebo are featured on this hilltop farm that looks far into Grayson County from their Celina vantage point. This stop will also be host to the Garden Club’s lunch which is included in the $10 ticket and good for all garden tour stops.

Tickets may be purchased at Texas Seasons, Bruce Miller Nursery and Shades of Green, or at any of the sites on the day of the event. Children younger than 10 may go on the tour for free. In case of rain, the show will go on, so make plans now to attend what could be the fall event of the year.

Proceeds from the tour will go to beautification projects in and around Celina, and the club’s annual scholarship to a deserving Celina high school senior who plans to enter a career in horticulture.
