Craft store opens its doors on the square

Published: Friday, August 17, 2007 12:44 PM CDT
Friday night was busy on the Historic Celina Downtown Square. A movie was playing on the big screen, children were out showing their spirit, and a new store was introducing itself to the community - Delightful Hands: Memories, Paper Crafts & Yarn.

According to a press release, "Delightful Hands gives a delightful reason to venture into downtown Celina," and specializes in scrapbooking, card making, home décor paper crafts, knitting and crochet.

The store features a knitting nook - which resembles "a cozy living room, with comfy leather seating surrounded by beautiful yarns and all the tools from needles hooks, patterns and books." Digital televisions play instructional DVDs, a customer's own favorite video, or other regular television channels.

In another area of the shop, wine entrepreneur/connoisseur Joe Anselmo of Carmela Winery in Prosper was in for a visit on this particular Friday. Delightful Hands owner Sherry Anderson thought it would be a great idea to have Anselmo talk about his wine as store staff poured "tastes" of hand-selected wines made right in downtown Prosper. According to the release, "it was a perfect fit" as crafters made the Friday night project; which was a wine decanter/gift box. Crafters personalized their decanters with paper, ribbons, ink, rhinestones, and other products offered at the store while tasting and learning about the wines and services offered at Carmela.

"It was a great evening," Anselmo said. "We share the same customers and I was delighted to join Sherry and her guests when asked to come and talk about my wines."

Customers who weren't participating in the "Friday night Project," which begins every Friday night at 7:30 p.m., were browsing the scrapbook, paper craft, and knitting and crochet supplies. Delightful Hands is open Tuesday through Saturday.

"We are here late on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights," Anderson said. "We host groups, special events and private gatherings as well. Classes and lessons are offered in all the craft areas and we hope to be expanding into other needle arts in the future as well as digital scrapbooking."

Anderson joins her mother, Sandra Sellers, in owning/operating the local craft boutique.

"It has always been a dream of ours to live in the same area, work together, and share our passion for crafts with others," Sellers said. "We've lived apart for 25 years and after years of planning, dreaming, and praying we finally have realized our dream."

Sellers' daughter Nina is also involved in the business.

"I love it," Nina, a freshman at Prosper High School, said. "It is a lot of fun showing my mom what girls my age like."

Delightful Hands is located at 310 W. Walnut in downtown Celina. For information, call 972-382-8414.
