Pirate Magician teaches kids to read

Published: Thursday, May 31, 2007 6:51 PM CDT
The Celina Community Library had a visit from an interesting character Wednesday morning. Brett Roberts, the pirate magician, visited The Celina Community Library to share a message with young readers.

His presentation included several magic tricks, puppetry, demonstrations and lessons to express to the many children in attendance. Roberts even called some of the young audience members to participate.

“He encouraged students to read about magic and pirates and to come to the library to check books out,” said Library Director Donna Senter. “Several children were picked from the audience to help perform the magic tricks.”

This visit was part of several programs taking place at the library this summer.

The Sail Away with Books program is for all ages and requires two books to be read and a log to be returned to the library. Participants who complete the requirements are allowed to select a prize from a basket and are entered into a drawing for a boom box, a portable CD player, or Curious George.

The Celina Community Library is participating in The Barnes and Noble reading program, which requires eight books to be read, a completed journal page that can be found at the library, parent signatures, and the journal page must be returned to Barnes and Noble between May 29 and Sept 2 for a coupon for a free book.

The Ringling Brothers program, also being implemented at The Celina Community Library, is for ages 2 to 12 and requires readers to pick up a reward card from the library, read five books, bring the reward card to the library each time to be stamped and turn the card in for a free ticket to the Rignling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Cards can be returned to the American Airlines Center in Dallas or the Fort Worth Convention Center. The circus will be in Dallas Aug. 1-12 and in Fort Worth Aug. 15-19. Other events that will be taking place at the library include The Elephant’s Trunk by Storyteller Esther Malone on June 6, Creatures of the Sea by the Creature Teacher Robyn Wheeler on June 12, and The Tortoise and the Hare by the Story Time Theater on June 19.

The Celina Community Library is located inside Celina High School, located at 710 East Pecan Street and will be open during the summer on weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call The Celina Community Library at 469-742-9131.
